international classification of
products and services
The international classification of goods and services for the purpose of trademark registration (hereinafter referred to as the "Nice classification") was established by virtue of an agreement reached at the Diplomatic Conference in Nice on 15 June 1957, revised in Stockholm in 1967 and in Geneva in1977, and modified in 1979. The member countries of the Nice Agreement are constituted in the form of a particular union within the framework of the Paris Union for the protection of industrial property. For the registration of trademarks they have adopted and apply the Nice Classification. Each member country of the Nice Agreement is required, for trademark registrations, to apply the Nice Classification, both for the main and auxiliary purposes, and to indicate in the documents and official publications of its registrations the number of classes of the classification to which the products and services for which the trademarks are registered belong.

The Nice classification is a system adopted for the purpose of classifying products and services for European Union (EU) trademark applications. It consists of 45 classes. According to the Nice classification, the products fall into classes 1 to 34 and the services fall into classes 35 to 45. Each class has a header containing general information on the type of products or services covered. The heading of class 25, for example, is "Articles of clothing, shoes, headgear" and that of class 15 is "Musical instruments".

The use of the Nice Classification is not mandatory only for the national registration of trademarks in the member countries of the Nice Agreement. It is also the case for the international registration of marks carried out by the International Office of WIPO under the Madrid Agreement concerning the international registration of marks and the Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement concerning the international registration of marks as well as for the registration of trademarks carried out by the Benelux Trade Mark Office (BBM), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (trade marks and designs) (EUIPO), the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO).
